Put your handwriting in the font menu

inktype.cc exports an OpenType font with an .otf extension. Install that file once, restart the app where you want to type, and select the family name you chose during export.

Before installing

Use a name you will recognise

The name entered in the export dialog becomes the font family name shown by your operating system and apps. If you are testing several versions, give each one a distinct name such as “Marta Hand 2”. This avoids confusion with an older installed copy.

inktype.cc currently exports OTF only. It does not export TTF, WOFF, or SVG fonts.

macOS

Open the OTF in Font Book

  1. Find the exported .otf file.It will usually be in Downloads unless you chose another folder.
  2. Double-click the file.Font Book opens a preview and checks the font.
  3. Click Install.The family is then available to apps that use installed fonts.
  4. Restart the app where you want to type.Open its font menu and search for the family name used during export.

Windows 10 and 11

Install from File Explorer

  1. Find the exported .otf file.Right-click it in File Explorer.
  2. Choose Install.If the font should be available to every account on the computer, choose Install for all users when that option is available.
  3. Check the font list.Open Settings, then Personalization and Fonts, and search for the family name.
  4. Restart the app where you want to type.Its font menu may not refresh while the app is open.

Linux

Use your desktop font viewer or your local fonts folder

Many Linux desktops install a font when you open the OTF and click Install. If your desktop does not offer that action, copy the file to ~/.local/share/fonts, then run fc-cache -f in a terminal. The exact menu and folder can vary by distribution.

Close and reopen the app where you want to use the font. Some apps manage their own font libraries, so check the app's documentation if the family appears elsewhere but not there.

If it is missing

Check the system before exporting again

  • Search for the family name, not the .otf filename.
  • Restart the app, or sign out and back in if several apps still show the old font list.
  • Remove an older copy with the same family name, then install the latest export again.
  • Try the font in another desktop app that supports custom fonts.

If the family installs but particular letters look wrong, return to the editor with the original scan. The troubleshooting guide covers spacing, missing strokes, and replacement glyphs.

Moving the font

The OTF can go to another computer

Copy the exported file to the other computer and repeat the installation steps for its operating system. You do not need the original capture sheet to install an existing OTF. Keep the scan if you may want to edit and export the font again later.
