Put your handwriting in the font menu

Export your handwriting as OTF or TTF, install the file, then select its family name in your app. WOFF and WOFF2 are for websites. The inktype apps for Mac and Windows can install your font directly.

Before installing

Use a name you will recognise

The name entered in the export dialog becomes the font family name shown by your operating system and apps. If you are testing several versions, give each one a distinct name such as "Marta Hand 2". This avoids confusion with an older installed copy.

inktype.cc exports OTF, TTF, WOFF and WOFF2. Install the OTF, or the TTF if an app won't open OTF. WOFF2 and WOFF are for websites and don't install. There are no SVG or variable fonts.

macOS

Open the OTF or TTF in Font Book

  1. Find the exported .otf or .ttf file.It will usually be in Downloads unless you chose another folder.
  2. Double-click the file.Font Book opens a preview and checks the font.
  3. Click Install.The family is then available to apps that use installed fonts.
  4. Restart the app where you want to type.Open its font menu and search for the family name used during export.

Windows 10 and 11

Install from File Explorer

You can create handwriting fonts directly on Windows in Edge, Chrome, or Firefox on inktype.cc without needing Microsoft Font Maker. Once you export your font, install the OTF or TTF file:

  1. Find the exported .otf or .ttf file.Right-click it in File Explorer.
  2. Choose Install.If the font should be available to every account on the computer, choose Install for all users when that option is available.
  3. Check the font list.Open Settings, then Personalization and Fonts, and search for the family name.
  4. Restart the app where you want to type.Its font menu may not refresh while the app is open.

Using inktype for Windows 11 (x64)? Click Install… in the editor, enter a font name, then click Install. Restart the app where you want to type if its font menu has not refreshed. The Windows app includes one free project; more projects require a one-time purchase.

Linux

Use your desktop font viewer or your local fonts folder

Many Linux desktops install a font when you open the OTF and click Install. If your desktop does not offer that action, copy the file to ~/.local/share/fonts, then run fc-cache -f in a terminal. The exact menu and folder can vary by distribution.

Close and reopen the app where you want to use the font. Some apps manage their own font libraries, so check the app's documentation if the family appears elsewhere but not there.

If it is missing

Check the system before exporting again

  • Search for the family name, not the .otf filename.
  • Restart the app, or sign out and back in if several apps still show the old font list.
  • Remove an older copy with the same family name, then install the latest export again.
  • Try the font in another desktop app that supports custom fonts.

If the family installs but particular letters look wrong, return to the editor with the original scan. The troubleshooting guide covers spacing, missing strokes, and replacement glyphs.

Moving the font

Take the font to another computer

Copy the exported file to the other computer and repeat the installation steps for its operating system. You do not need the original capture sheet to install an existing OTF. Keep the scan if you may want to edit and export the font again later.
